What’s new in Windows 10 Pro?
Windows 10 Pro comes with a host of new features both in software and appearance. Notably, it sees the return of the Start menu as seen in Windows 7.
The new Start menu
With Windows 8, Microsoft decided to abandon the Start button – a key feature of all previous versions of Windows, which allowed users to navigate directly to programs, files, and functions quickly and efficiently. This decision was widely criticized, and Microsoft responded by reintroducing the familiar yet improved Start menu in Windows 10.
The Windows 10 Start menu allows for quick access to applications and programs, as well as the ability to search for content quickly. It can also be customized by “pinning”, moving, and resizing items to create your own personalized menu of favorite and most-used programs, websites, files, and contacts.
Cortana, the new personal assistant
One of the significant innovations in Windows 10 is the integration of Cortana. Described by Microsoft as “a true digital personal assistant”, Cortana is a smart application that responds to your personal data and provides you with personalized updates, such as calendar reminders and task management help.
Cortana can also provide better, more personalized search results. For example, you can ask, “Where did I save the Word document I was working on last night?” or “What will the weather be like tomorrow morning?” and Cortana will assist you. Moreover, if you’re bored or have time to kill, you can even ask Cortana to sing you a song, tell you a joke, or do a good impression, and she will comply!
Microsoft Edge, the new web browser
Microsoft Edge is a more advanced web browser, taking the place of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Edge is much faster than Internet Explorer, and offers more advanced search functions (which incorporate the use of Cortana to provide smarter, personalized results).
Furthermore, Edge has a “write on the web” function that allows you to take notes, highlight, and doodle directly on web pages. Edge also has a very handy reading list function, which lets you save raw, distraction-free content that you can consume later, at your convenience.
Windows Store: a shop for apps, games, and entertainment
Windows 10 comes with a range of free built-in apps, such as Skype and Microsoft OneDrive. Additionally, a new Windows Store allows users to download additional apps to their computer (some are free, others paid), ranging from productivity apps to games and entertainment.
Evolved multitasking
Windows 10 has some impressive features that allow for more advanced multitasking. First, a “task view” button at the bottom of the desktop allows you to zoom out of where you are to see all open programs and applications. Windows 10 also allows you to split your screen in half, with one application occupying one side and another occupying the other – very useful for cross-referencing or moving data between applications. You can even create multiple desktops, saving specific configurations of applications and programs that suit different computer uses.
Windows Hello: a personalized and secure way to access your device
You can log into your Windows 10 computer as usual, via a secure password. However, depending on your device’s capability, Windows 10 offers even more convenient ways to unlock your computer. With biometric technology, users can set up their device for access via facial recognition, fingerprints, or even iris. That’s right, you can unlock your computer by touching your fingerprint or scanning your face or eye through your webcam.
Microsoft Continuum: integrate your phone with your PC
If you own a Windows smartphone, Continuum will allow you to seamlessly integrate various devices and even use your phone as your primary computer, with all the basic Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, scaled from your phone to the big screen.
With Continuum, you can connect your smartphone to a keyboard and screen, effectively using your phone as a desktop computer. You can also connect your phone wirelessly to a TV and use it as a remote or for browsing the web.
